Greetings!

The intriguing style of Charleston .... it encompasses a metropolitan area in South Carolina known by locals as the 'Lowcountry' and recognized by others, as the Charleston region. For more than 300 years, this east coast community has developed many styles ... historic style, architectural & design style, and more recently a culinary style all contributing to a unique, cosmopolitan style. And now... there's no doubt about Charleston's newest crowning style addition, ...it is all about the evolving, “Sports Style!”

Today, the Charleston area's sports scene includes over 86,000 recreation, amateur and professional athletes, along with their attendees from all over the US and the World – traveling each year to this top-ranked travel destination. Sports competition may come first, but taking part in Charleston's ambiance while visiting, is second to none.

The Charleston Area Sports Commission recognizes it takes state-of-the-art venues, experienced sports industry professionals, knowledgeable public leaders, grass-roots sports organizations -- all working closely together -- to stage a successful sports event.

But our research shows that on average, an athlete will spend just four (4) competitive hours on the 'playing field,' and then another 36 hours alongside friends and family members during their travels.

For the athlete, the added appeal of this premier travel destination makes for a well-prepared competition to quickly become much more than just another athletic appearance. Perhaps this is why sports event organizers return year after year, for the unprecedented assurance known as the, “Style Points Guarantee.” All entities involved with staging a successful event acquire major style points when Charleston SC is the destination of choice.

We thank you for considering the Charleston area for your next sports event. And, we look forward to an opportunity to show you first-hand why hundreds of sports event organizers have accomplished first-place accolades for selecting our region as their sports travel destination.

Yours in Sports,

Kathleen Cartland
Executive Director
Charleston Area Sports Commission, Inc.

The following is a recent Q/A with SportsEvents Magazine and Executive Director, Kathleen Cartland about Charleston as a sports destination:

SE--What makes your city an appealing/unique sporting event destination?

Charleston SC regularly receives top rankings and accolades for being a great travel destination.  The most prestigious recognition was given by Conde Nast Traveler magazine, naming the city as the #1 travel destination in the country for three consecutive years. (2011-2013).  Charleston was also voted the #5 Best City in the World and last year it topped the list as #1 with the Reader’s Award from the magazine.

The appeal of Charleston is a compilation of many features.  Our sports travelers indicate a number of reasons for coming to a sports event, besides the competition itself.  They are:  restaurants;  shopping/fashion;  history,  beaches and outdoor recreation.  Top attributes in which we are recognized for are the region’s affordability, friendliness, uniqueness and accessibility.

SE—What are the total number of hotel rooms in the Charleston area?

Currently the Charleston region has over 90 hotels, B&B, Inns, etc. for a total of 15,373 rooms.  In addition, there are another 8,000 rental rooms located in villas, cottages and beach homes.

SE—What are the total hotel tax rate, including any city/state tax that must be paid along with it?

Our total hotel tax rate ranges from 12.5 - 13.5%, depending on the municipality.
